Byrd HSA Committees

SUPPORT YOUR CHILD’S CLASS!

The Byrd HSA is a terrific way to become more involved in your child’s elementary school experience and become part of the Byrd School Community. We have opportunities for people who want to be actively involved, at all levels of time commitment. 

Byrd HSA President(s)

Chair:   Jen Lota and Sharon Tishco
Description:  

The Co-Presidents oversee the HSA Board and ensure that HSA activities have the resources and tools necessary to run smoothly. They conduct monthly board meetings and several general meetings throughout the year. The Co-Presidents also meet with school administration on a regular basis to stay in touch with school happenings and needs. Each Co-President serves a two-year-term.

 

TIC TOC

Chair:   Julia Surkhov and Julie Finkle
Description:  

Tic Toc stands for To Inspire Culture to Our Children. Among other activities, the organization runs an Art Docent program. Tic Toc has a number of painting collections and special collections (with artifacts, textiles, sculptures, pottery, and other objects) that rotate through the participating schools. Volunteer parents (1) take the art that is currently at the school to their child’s classroom, (2) have a presentation or a discussion about it and (3) do an activity or a project relating to the artwork. It is really as easy as 1-2-3. You can volunteer as much or as little as you want. 

 
Health Fair
Chair:   Nicole Hayward
Description:  

Assist coordinating Health Fair.

 

Secretary

Chair:   Sara MacDonald
Description:  

The Secretary attends all HSA general and Board meetings and keeps an accurate record of happenings at these meetings, including attendance records. She maintains all HSA records except for financial records, which are maintained by the Treasurer. In an effort to strengthen communication amongst the Byrd community, the secretary will provide HSA meeting highlights for class parents to distribute to their individual classes. 

 

Treasurer

Chair:   Amy Mortko
Description:  

The Treasurer manages HSA bank deposits and checks monthly bank statements. She collects and deposits cash and checks for all school events and manages Paperless PTO deposits. The Treasurer also prepares budget reports for all HSA meetings.

Description:  

The 1st VP of Administration/Community oversees the following student enrichment committees & programs, listed below. Chiars and volunteers for each committee are listed individually.

Author Days

Description:  

Assists Mrs. Jakobsen with preparation and welcoming of notable authors who visit Byrd School.

 

Art Docent/TIC TOC

Description:  

Parent volunteers visit their child’s classroom to teach about an artist or artistic style. No artistic expertise needed.

Creative ideas and training are provided by the TIC TOC organization.

Byrd Beautification Team

Description:  

New commitee with lots of opportunities to share a love of gardening, nature, and the environment through plantings and clean up of Byrd school grounds.

 

Great Book Give-Away

Chair:   Roseanna Smith
Description:  

Manage a gently used book drive for a local charity of your choice.

Time frame: 3-4 hours

Commitment: flexible, can be done after school hours

Description:  

Activities include:

1) Distributing toys/books/needed items to local hospital for children in need

2) Collecting Halloween candy for donation

3) Coordinating and publicizing other charitable efforts

Time frame: 3-4 hours for each activity

Commitment: flexible, can be done after school hours

 

Class Parent Coordinators

Description:  

Duties include:

1) Serving as the liaison between the HSA Board and the class parents

2) Coordinating class parent assignments and explaining responsibilities

 

 

Learning Center (Library) Volunteer Coordinator

Chair:   Monica Lauro
Description:  

Prepares the Learning Center volunteer schedule for Mrs. Jakobsen.


A library volunteer assists the children with checking out library books at the Byrd School library and putting books away on th shelves.  By volunteering in the library, you have an opportunity to work with your child's class as well as allow Mrs. Jakobsen to do some enriching activities with the children and/or to help them find an interesting book. Your volunteer time is 50 minutes and, depending on the number of volunteers for your child's class, generally once a month.

 

HSA Membership

Description:  

Coordinate and assist with membership recruitment efforts for Byrd school families and administration.

 

Playground Committee

Chair:   Liz Tullo and Megan Jolin
Description:  

Duties include:

1) Researching and recommending new equipment Byrd School needs for the playground

2) Reporting on equipment and pricing for HSA Exec Board

3) As needed, purchasing supplies for playground

4) Communicating with parents/students about their wish lists

 

School Safety Committee

Chair:   Jen Collins, Stacia Klui, Keara Kumler, Megan Jolin
Description:  

This new committee is helping keep parents informed of traffic patterns around Byrd School and promoting school safety.

 

Teacher Appreciation 

Chair:   Libby Deely, Leslie Schraer, Gena Incantalupo
Description:  

Duties include:

1) Planning a catered luncheon for teachers and staff in early May

2) Coordinating donations from parents for small, needed teacher appreciation gifts during the teacher appreciation week

3) Implementing another teacher appreciation initiatives

 

Welcome Back Coffee

Chair:   Andrea Ryan and Joe Garrett
Description:  

Set up a table outside on the lawn with coffee and donuts for parents to enjoy after drop-off the first day of school.

 

Welcome Back Staff Luncheon

Chair:   Alix Schafer, Keara Kumler, Kristen Bond
Description:  

Plans a catered luncheon to welcome back the staff to school during the the first week of school.

Plan the popular Bingo Nights for Byrd families, twice a year! Families play Bingo together and hang out with Byrd friends in the school gym.

 

 

Byrd Big Top Circus  (4th Grade Parents)

Description:  

Duties include:

1) acting as point of contact with circus vendor

2) purchasing (on behalf of HSA) snacks and circus gear for Friday event sales

3) coordinating volunteers for Circus

 

 

Byrd Dance

Description:  

Classes in Ballet, Tap, Jazz, and Hip Hop are offered from preschool-age to fifth grade and held in Byrd School.

 

Family Fun Day

Description:  

Plan a back to school welcome event for the Byrd school community on Saturday, September 15!

 

Fall/Spring Parent Socials

Description:  

The socials provide parents a wonderful way to get to know new Byrd families and reconnect with old friends. 

This 2018 fall social is a Progressive Party scheduled for October 13, 2018. More details to come closer to the date.

Field Day

Description:  

This is a fun-filled day of sports and games.  Held outside at Faber Field in late spring, parents volunteer to help our P.E. teacher run a variety of activities including providing a cookout lunch for the school.

Coordinate lunchtime program for a six week period in the winter months. Select activities, assign & schedule parents and work with school staff.

 

Fall Father / Daughter Dance

Description:  

Read Across America Day is a nationwide reading celebration that takes place annually on March 2—Dr. Seuss’s birthday. Across the country, thousands of schools, libraries, and community centers participate by bringing together kids, teens, and books.  Coordinate guest readers for each class.

This person organizes the collection and submission of Box Tops for Education. This includes providing collection boxes to classes, collecting and counting the box tops, and communicating totals

 

Harlem Wizards Fundraiser

Half Day Alternative Snack Fundraiser

Coordinate sales of snack from local shop on half session school day

 

Holiday Shop

This event gives students the chance to do their holiday shopping. Coordinators shop and inventory items to sell, coordinate volunteers, set up, and  clean up

 

Ice Cream Days

Description:  

Manage ice cream sales and inventory.  Ice cream sold 1x per week, usually on Thursday during lunch.

 

KidStuff Coupon Book

Chair:   Brigid Nonas
Description:  

Work with Kids Stuff to coordinate receiving books and order forms. Send one book home per family with an order form.  Collect and tally order forms and any books not wanted.

 

Pizza Day

Chair:   Monica Lauro, Jen Scott, and Joe Garrett
Description:  

The Pizza Day Coordinators keep track of customers, work with pizza vendor to make/deliver pizzas to school on proper days, organize parent volunteers to serve pizza, and maintain process month-to-month.  Pizza served 2x a month on Wednesdays.

 

Book Fair

Description:  

Coordinate delivery, inventory books, set up and run event.

 

School Supply Boxes

Description:  

Coordinate the sale of School Supply boxes in May and June.  Help distribute boxes to classrooms before school starts.

Description:  

Plan and design Byrd School clothing and fun items that will be available for order and coordinate sales of these items.

 

Communications Chair

This person will serve as the key link from school to home for all HSA supported communication tools, providing timely and accurate distribution via the newsletter (Byrd Highlights) and the HSA website.

New Family Liason

Helps organize and attends S.E.P.A.C. (Special Education Parent Advisory Councils) meetings and reports back to the HSA.

 

Public Library Liason

Description:  

Attend Friends of the Library meetings and be Point of Contact for them.

Work with the school librarian, Mrs. Jakobsen, to organize, publicize and execute The Read-a-thon.  Students are asked to register for the read-a-thon, collect pledges, and track the number of books they read during the month of March.  The Read-a-thon is a partnership between the Glen Rock Public Library and elementary schools to encourage and incentivize reading. Top readers receive awards at a school assembly in the spring, and the school whose students read the most books are recognized by the Friends of the Library, who receive any money raised.
